The venerable Le Marche aux Puces St-Ouen, also referred to as Clignancourt, on Paris’s northern boundary, still attracts the crowds when it opens — Friday from 6 AM to 2 PM, Saturday from 7 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday and Monday from 10:30 AM to 6 PM — -but its once-unbeatable prices are now a relic of the past. This century-old labyrinth of alleyways packed with antiques dealers’ booths and junk stalls spreads for more than a square mile. Arrive early to pick up the most worthwhile loot (like old prints). But be warned — if there’s one place in Paris where you need to know how to bargain, this is it! For lunch, stop for mussels and fries in one of the rough-and-ready cafes.

On the southern and eastern sides of the city – at Porte de Vanves and Porte de Montreuil – are other, smaller flea markets. Vanves is a hit with the fashion set and specializes in smaller objects – mirrors, textiles, handbags, clothing, and glass. It’s open on weekends only from 8 AM to 5 PM, but you have to arrive early if you want to find a bargain: the good stuff goes fast and stalls are liable to be packed up before noon.
